Perspective
Why Sodes exists.
Most technology fails for reasons that have nothing to do with technology. The wrong problem. A decision already made. Enthusiasm mistaken for strategy. We built Sodes to sit on the other side of that conversation, and to bring judgement to decisions before they become expensive.
The name
Why Sodes?
Pronounced “soh-dess”.
The name comes from the Japanese expression sō desu ne, a thoughtful acknowledgement that means “I see” or “that’s right”. It is not simply agreement. It is the moment of understanding that comes just before a considered response.
We think good technology work should follow the same order. Understand first, then act. The name is a small reminder of the discipline the whole practice is built on.
Thirty years of perspective
Experience across
every cycle.
Sodes is built on more than three decades of experience helping organisations make better technology decisions. Our principal, Jordan Millar, has spent that time designing intelligent systems, leading enterprise technology and building products, through every major shift since the early 1990s: client server, the web, mobile, cloud, data, and now AI.
For more than a decade of that career, he founded and led ChekRite, an inspection and asset-management platform used on real sites across construction, mining and manufacturing. That is a different kind of experience from advising from the outside. It means having built a product, carried the commercial risk, and made technology work in demanding conditions where the people using it have no patience for anything that does not.
Each new wave of technology arrives wrapped in the same certainty that everything has changed. Some of it has. Most of it has not. That is the value of having built through a few cycles rather than just watched them. You learn to tell a genuine shift from a passing fashion, and to advise accordingly.
Technology changes. Good judgement doesn’t.
Our philosophy
A few things we believe.
These convictions shape every engagement. They are simple to state and harder to hold to once a project is underway. We hold to them anyway.
Understand before recommending.
The recommendation is the easy part. The work is understanding the organisation, the people and the real problem well enough to know whether the recommendation is right.
Solve the real problem.
The problem you are handed is often a symptom of a deeper one. We look for the problem worth solving, not just the one on the brief.
AI is a tool, not a strategy.
AI is one capability among many. Aimed at a clear outcome it is powerful. Adopted because it is expected, it is expensive theatre.
Technology should reduce complexity.
Good technology makes things simpler for the people who use it. If a solution adds complexity, it is usually solving the wrong thing.
Innovation should be practical.
Innovation that never leaves the lab is a cost, not a capability. We favour ideas that can be proven small and put to work.
Value must be measurable.
If the value of a decision cannot be described before you make it, it usually cannot be found afterwards.
How we work
A clear approach.
Real outcomes.
Every engagement is different. The shape of the work is not.
- 01
Understand
We begin with your organisation, your people and the problem, not with a solution. Most of the value is decided here, before anything is built.
- 02
Align
We connect the technology decision to strategic objectives, operational reality and executive priorities, so the answer holds up in the room where it matters.
- 03
Build
Product, platform, integration or intelligent system, we build for the long term rather than the demo. What we deliver is meant to be used for years, not weeks.
- 04
Evolve
Technology is not static, and neither is a good decision. We measure outcomes, improve what is working and build the capability for you to carry it forward.
Who we work with
We are selective by design.
Good work depends on a genuine fit, and we would rather establish that early. We tend to do our best work with organisations where the following is true.
We are a good fit if:
- You are solving a genuine business problem, not shopping for a technology.
- Leadership is committed to the change, not just curious about it.
- You value lasting outcomes over quick wins.
- You want an experienced partner who will disagree with you, not a vendor who will not.
- You are willing to challenge how things are done today.
We are probably not the right fit if:
- You want AI for its own sake.
- Executive leadership is not genuinely invested.
- Success is measured by activity rather than impact.
- You want someone to validate a decision that has already been made.
- You are looking for the cheapest option.
Let’s solve the
right problem.
If this sounds like the kind of partner you are looking for, we should talk.
